Five things to prepare before you brief a designer

Mei Tanaka · · 3 min read

The best first concepts come from the clearest briefs. None of this needs design knowledge. Twenty minutes with a notes app is plenty.

  1. Describe your best customer. One real person, not a demographic. What do they buy, and why from you?
  2. Name three competitors. And one thing each does better or worse than you.
  3. Collect three things you like. Any brand, any industry. A coffee bag, a bank app, a shop sign. Say what you like about each.
  4. List what you hate. Colours, styles, clichés. This saves more time than anything else on this list.
  5. Write down the words you already use. How you describe the business to a stranger at a party. That sentence often becomes the headline.

Got those? Our brief form asks for exactly this. Start yours.
